Profile
Broadcast
TV studios, theatres, sound stages, and video teleconference rooms --
these performance spaces represent unique design and construction challenges.
In response to the diversity of demands imposed upon them, and to keep
pace with continuous technological development, these spaces have become
increasingly sophisticated. The activities in each type of facility are
distinct from each other and each space is unique to each type of activity,
yet all spaces share the common goal of supporting a performance event.
The
performance space must facilitate and enhance unusual and extraordinary
events occurring in real time. When the curtain goes up, the camera rolls,
or the satellite hookup is complete, events must move forward in a precise
fashion without interruption.
Prior
to and following the performance event, the facility must allow the most
efficient turn-around possible. It matters little to the facility owner
or manager if a truly extraordinary event can be accommodated by the facility
if time and cost requirements of set-up and removal exceed the earnings
or value of the event itself.
For
the performance facility project to reach a successful conclusion, planning,
design, and engineering processes must be based on a comprehensive and
creative knowledge of performance space uses in order to achieve the following:
- Development
of a creative and workable space
- Realistic
budget projections
- Tangible
cost effectiveness
- Energy
efficiency
- Future
facility flexibility
Since
1978, Norman Russell has contributed planning and construction supervision
services on a wide variety of performance spaces and has provided the
expertise and creativity necessary for the successful completion of hundreds
of projects. Norman Russell's background includes more than twenty five
years of production experience in theatre, broadcast television, video
and film production, extensive hands-on experience working with manufacturers
and suppliers of performance systems and equipment, advanced academic
degrees, and five years of college and university lecturing.
The
uniqueness of Norman Russell's expertise lies in the depth and the breadth
of his experience over all categories of performance spaces. These facilities
share many considerations such as configuration and acoustics, and use
similar rigging, lighting, and sound technologies, systems, and equipment.
Norman
Russell has consistently demonstrated creativity in transposing concepts
and techniques from one type of venue to another, and in his effective
application of emerging technologies. In addition to his work with new
construction, Norman Russell has had a wide range of experiences in the
planning and design for adaptive reuse of existing facilities as performance
spaces, and with the upgrading of systems and equipment in facility renovations.
Norman
Russell provides the creativity and the knowledge needed to establish
a program of use and subsequent design parameters of the project, to accurately
assess project requirements and costs, to develop designs and contract
documentation, and to assist with contract bids and negotiations.
Once
construction begins, Norman Russell's experience guides the project through
the review of contract work, the training of production staff, and the
provision start-up production services.
A
scope of consultation services can be matched to any project based on
the specific needs of the project. Where a project requires specialists
in related areas of expertise such as acoustic modeling or video engineering,
Norman Russell has working relationships with recognized experts in many
fields, and can provide such services if desired.
Norman
Russell is dedicated to providing performance facility consultation of
the highest level for any size or type of project at a reasonable cost.
In fact, by avoiding many of the pitfalls of performance space planning
and construction, Norman Russell assists in the reduction of costs and
the elimination of delays.
